My water broke at midnight Friday August 7th. P. was playing poker with the guys and wasn't home. I texted him, "My water just broke!" and he texted back, "I'm on my way!" I called our friend Karen to come stay with the kids, put some clothes on and finished packing our bag, and called the doctor who said not to waste any time and come on in. We made it to the hospital by 1am and were in our triage room by 1:20am. Contractions increased in frequency and intensity quickly and I became very uncomfortable very quickly. By the time we got upstairs to our delivery room I was having contractions one after another. I started to get scared. There was no time for drugs, no time for doctor, no time to breathe. They told me I couldn't push yet until a doctor arrived and I pushed anyway. The pain was unimaginable. I don't have words to explain it. I remember saying to P. that I was going to pass out and everyone yelling at me to breathe. I was scared out of my mind trying to figure out how to handle this. I was so unprepared for a delivery without drugs. They found an attending doctor who ran in, put her gown and gloves in and they let me push. One giant push, with a couple breaths in between and she was out. That sentence makes it sound so easy. It wasn't easy. But she was out and in my arms and the moment I had waited for for 9 months was finally here. She was very slimy and kinda white and blue. Not pretty but the most gorgeous thing I had ever seen. But ow, it was still hurting down there. To make a long story short, Jamie was here at 2:26am, just over an hour after arriving at the hospital. 8lbs, 8oz, 20 inches long. Healthy and happy but a little bruised from her speedy trip down the birth canal. She has tons of dark hair and dark skin. She has asian eyes just like mom and Pete. Maybe even more so than Pete. She looked like Pete, still does. I remember hearing her cry right when she came out and often during the first intial hour of her life as they measured and tested her. At one point they laid her down on my chest and she nestled right in and quited down. It was heaven.
We spent 2 nights in the hospital. I was going to try to go home after one but didn't feel well enough to do that. Jamie was an angel. She nursed right away like a natural. She slept all the time and when she was awake she was sweet and content. We had lots of wonderful visitors, the hospital fed us well and it was exciting to spend every moment with our new daughter. I can't say I felt well. Actually I felt terrible. But the adrenaline was pumping and the pain meds kept coming so that helped.
Pete and Katie stayed home with Karen the first night and my in-laws the rest of the weekend. I was worried about Pete adjusting to life without us but from what I have heard he did extremely well. I missed him terribly.
Overall things went just as they should have. Maybe not as I planned but in the end the result was the same. We had our girl. And she is perfect. Here are some pictures of her first days with us. Welcome to baby Jamie. We love you more than words can say. Thank you for blessing our lives with your arrival.
Mom and dad anxiously awaiting our baby girl in the triage room. Things went quickly from here.
